The emergency management concentration is designed for individuals who intend to assume greater leadership and management responsibility in helping communities reduce vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters in both private and public settings. Students gain an essential understanding of the entire vision, mission, and principles of emergency management with an emphasis on leadership, management, use of technology and both inter-agency collaboration and cross-sector collaboration.

Many emergency management-related positions reside in public sector agencies at all levels of government—and the concentration is not limited to those who are focused becoming an emergency manager per se. Those who are interested in pursuing careers in, and developing expertise in planning, emergency training and exercises, disaster recovery, hazards mitigation, and similar areas might choose to declare this concentration. Further, private sector organizations are increasingly developing emergency services units within their firms to enhance operational resilience, thus presenting another set of career opportunities.

The EMHS community resilience concentration is focused on developing knowledge and expertise pertaining to the interdisciplinary challenges of managing hazards and promoting sustainable practices as related to the functional areas of first response and emergency/crisis management. Its career path tracks for positions with specific hazards and response management responsibilities in areas such as planning, transportation, environmental quality, public health. The community resilience degree promotes the resilience capacity of urban systems and the physical and social infrastructure systems that support them, and reducing risk associated with natural, and technological disruptions.

This concentration area is designed to meet the career and professional development needs for those students interested in hazards management in general, whether it be natural or technological or intentionally-induced (i.e. terrorism). Developing expertise in hazards resilience cuts across a broad range of professional domains: it is relevant to traditional emergency management organizations, first response and public safety agencies, public health agencies, environmental protection agencies, and so on. Further, developing resilience expertise is useful for individuals with prior expertise and experience relevant to resilience, sustainability and hazards management—such as engineering, risk analysis, or communications—and are seeking to move into a career position more explicitly related to this broad field.

Students in the MAS in sustainable tourism receive a comprehensive education with a focus on the environmental, economic, and social aspects of tourism. Graduates are equipped with translatable skills necessary to create pioneering, sustainable development solutions to the challenges facing tourism today. The holistic curriculum focuses on integrating all three pillars of sustainability into existing tourism theories and concepts. The program prepares future sustainable tourism professionals to meet the increasing demand for people trained in sustainability practices and the application of those practices in tourism.

The proliferation of organizations such as Sustainable Travel International, National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations, and the International Ecotourism Society, among many others, points to the growing importance of this field. Many of the large hotel chains, airlines, attractions companies, and convention and visitor bureaus have instituted sustainability practices. Even the United States Agency for International Development website has an entire section devoted to sustainable tourism development and has supported 123 sustainable tourism projects in 72 countries.
